Joseph Pennell (1857 – 1926) is a Philadelphia-born American artist and printmaking legend. He studied at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art where he honed his skills as a lithographer, etcher, author, educator, lecturer, and illustrator. His artistic journey led him to London. He and his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell, collaborated on numerous travel books. Over his lifetime, Pennell crafted an impressive body of work, producing over 900 etchings and mezzotints and more than 600 lithographs, showcasing diverse subjects from the Panama Canal to English factories and Greek temples. Beyond his artistic talent, Pennell played a pivotal role in revitalizing printmaking and collecting, earning him the title of the dean of American printmaking. His works are in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art
