Lou Stovall (1937 – 2023) was a world-renown printmaker from Washington, D.C. whose innovative techniques and community building contributed to meaningful growth in the city’s art scene. His innovations in silkscreen printing pushed boundaries by using speckled layers and textured surfaces to capture paint-like effects. In 1968 he started Workshop Inc., a small printmaking studio that created posters for local events, concerts, and civil rights organizations and over time evolved into a professionally respected printmaking facility. Here, Stovall cultivated an artist community that brought together artists from across generations and cultures to learn and grow together. He collaborated with notable artists including Jacob Lawrence, Alexander Calder, Gene Davis, Sam Gilliam, and Di Bagley Stovall, his wife. In 1982, First Lady Nancy Regan asked Stovall to design the Independence Day invitation for the White House. His work has been featured at the Phillips Collection and the Kreeger Museum
