John L. Heatwole (1948 – 2006) was a versatile artist who shifted from clay to woodcarving in his early 20s. He honed his woodcarving skills under the guidance of mentors and exhibited his art publicly for many years. His work was prominently featured in the Neiman Marcus department store's Christmas window display in Washington, DC, from 1979 to 1985. His artistic journey also included exhibitions at the Delaware Art Museum and the Capitol Rotunda, making him the first artist from Virginia to have his art displayed there. By the time of his passing, Heatwole had created an estimated 3,000 pieces of art, leaving a significant mark on the artistic community.
